I have talked about the need and importance of monitoring your skin as it tries out new products or new ingredients. I also talked about how you need to have different skin care routines for the different seasons. Summer skincare is definitely different from winter skin care. The next blog posts I will be doing will cover each skin type's needed skin routine for the fall season. I wanted to start with sensitive skin first because remembering my youngest's son's skin affliction and how I have several friends who have now discovered their skin has changed to being more sensitive to products and ingredients even some natural ingredients. I hope this can help someone who is at their wit's end on how to pamper their skin through these cooler months ahead.

As we all know with cooler temperatures and lower humidity, the fall months can lead to flare-ups, dryness, irritation, and inflammation. Sensitive skin can become more reactive as it adapts to these environmental changes. That’s why transitioning your skincare routine for the fall is crucial to maintaining a healthy, balanced complexion.

This blog post is a blueprint to help you to adjust your routine with gentle, natural ingredients like chamomile, mango butter, and aloe vera—perfect for soothing and protecting sensitive skin.

Why Does Fall Affect Sensitive Skin?

During the fall, the combination of cooler air, wind, and indoor heating can cause a great deal of irritation on your skin's moisture barrier. This protective layer keeps irritants out and hydration in, but it can easily become compromised as the weather changes, leading to increased dryness and sensitivity.

If you already struggle with sensitive skin, these seasonal changes can trigger problems like redness, itching, and even eczema. Fortunately, with the right ingredients and adjustments to your skincare routine, you can protect your skin and keep it nourished all season long.

Tips to Transition Your Skincare Routine for Fall

1. Change Your Cleanser for a Gentler Formula

Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine, but it’s especially important to be mindful of the type of cleanser you’re using in the fall. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of natural oils, leaving it vulnerable to irritation.

Go for a mild, non-foaming cleanser that hydrates while removing impurities. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, which is known for its soothing and moisturizing properties.

Pro Tip: Avoid cleansers with sulfates or alcohol, as these ingredients can exacerbate dryness and irritation. Try using After Affects’ Calendula and Oatmeal Soap, which gently cleanses while nourishing sensitive skin.

2. Incorporate a Hydrating Toner or Mist

Hydration is key during the fall, and using a gentle, hydrating toner can replenish moisture and calm irritated skin. Avoid toners with alcohol and fragrances, which can further irritate sensitive skin. Instead, opt for a natural toner or mist that contains calming ingredients like chamomile and aloe vera.

Chamomile is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, making it ideal for fall when your skin may be prone to redness and irritation.

3. Switch to a Richer Moisturizer

In the summer, you may have used a lightweight moisturizer, but fall is the time to switch to a richer, more nourishing formula. Look for products containing mango butter, which is highly moisturizing and packed with vitamins A and C that help to repair and protect the skin barrier without clogging pores.

Mango butter is gentle and effective for sensitive skin, delivering hydration while reducing inflammation. It’s also rich in antioxidants, helping to shield your skin from environmental damage during the colder months.

Try After Affects’ Healing Balm, and some of our, which combines mango butter with other natural ingredients designed to hydrate and protect sensitive skin from the elements.

4. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

Although the sun may not feel as intense in the fall, UV rays are still present and can cause long-term damage to sensitive skin. Choose a natural, broad-spectrum sunscreen that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals. Look for zinc oxide, as these physical sunscreens are less likely to irritate sensitive skin compared to chemical sunscreens.

Be sure to apply sunscreen daily, even if it’s cloudy or you’re staying indoors. Don't forget to followup with a high antioxidant oil or product, like ours. Face renewal facial oil helps protect your skin from UV damage is crucial year-round, especially when your skin barrier is more delicate.

5. Add a Soothing Face Mask to Your Routine

For an extra layer of care, incorporating a weekly face mask can help calm and hydrate sensitive skin during the fall. Look for masks that contain gentle, natural ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, or rose clay to draw out impurities without causing irritation.

A calming mask can replenish moisture and reduce inflammation, helping to maintain your skin’s barrier as it adjusts to seasonal changes.
